Police record statements from ‘Seksualiti Merdeka’

Police took several statements from the organisers of the banned ‘2011 Seksualiti Merdeka’ event at the Tenaganita office yesterday.

Police took several statements from the organisers of the banned ‘2011 Seksualiti Merdeka’ event at the Tenaganita office yesterday.

Four police personnel from the Brickfields headquarters took statements from ‘Seksualiti Merdeka’ co-founder Pang Khee Teik, former Bar Council president S.Ambiga, women’s rights group Empower Malaysia executive-director Maria Chin Abdullah and Tenaganita executive-director Irene Fernandez.

Pang said he handed over a letter for the Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar, after his statement was recorded.

“We’re seeking an audience with the IGP to clarify our objectives and to show that we’re not doing what the media claims we are,” Pang asserted.

Marina Mahathir, who was present at the office, supported the event saying it aimed to defend fundamental human rights.

“Two years ago I officiated at this event, without any problems. It only seeks to educate the marginalised community about their legal rights,” she emphasised.
