Storms wreak havoc in Kedah village

Storms two days in a row from Sunday have severely damaged more than 20 houses in Kampung Kuala Sedaka near Yan, according to a resident.

Storms two days in a row from Sunday have severely damaged more than 20 houses in Kampung Kuala Sedaka, according to a resident Che Tom Sahar.

Che Tom, 73, said the roof of her house was blown off on Sunday during the storm at about 6 pm when she was at home with her son, Rahim Omar, 37.

She said Rahim has lodged a report with the Welfare Department and it was hoped that the authorities would help repair the house.

Che Tom has moved in with her son in Kampung Dulang for the time being.

The storms have struck at a time when the authorities are making preparations to face the worst floods in decades following reports of stronger winds, more rain and stronger currents.

In Alor Setar, the Kota Setar Department of Civil Defence said it was making the necessary preparations to face floods which it expects after the middle of next month.

“We expect the floods to occur after Nov 15. In 2009, the floods struck Kedah between Nov 6 and 21 and last year they occurred between Nov 1 and 13,” said Kota Setar acting civil defence officer Capt Saifuddin Abdullah.
