The Prisons Department will allow family members of Hindu inmates to visit them for Deepavali on Oct 27 and Oct 28.
Prisons deputy commissioner (policy division) Supri Hashim said in a statement today the flexibility was applicable at all prisons, reform centres and the Henry Gurney School, from 8.15 am to 4.15 pm on the two days.
He said family members of Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees at the detention camp in Kamunting, Taiping, can visit them on Oct 26 between 8.15 am and 4.15 pm. Deepavali is on Oct 26.
“Visitors are required to bring their visiting card and identity card. They are not allowed to bring food or drinks as these can be bought at the prison canteen,” he said.
He said the family members were also not encouraged to give money to the inmates as all basic necessities have been provided by the prisons department.
“If they wish to do so for certain purposes like examination fees and so on, they must obtain the official receipt from the prison,” he said.
