Freedom Film Fest: Meet the Orang Seletar, Malaysians you did not know

Liaw Pey Wen, a journalist for a Chinese language daily is one of the two winners of this year’s Freedom Film Fest. Liaw speaks with Komunitikini in an exclusive interview on the Orang Seletar community in Johor.

Liaw Pey Wen is a journalist for a Chinese language daily and is based in Johor Bahru.

She is one of the two winners of this year’s Freedom Film Fest and this is the first time she’s attempting to produce a documentary film.

Her subject is the Orang Seletar, an Orang Asli community whose livelihood depends very much on the sea. But over the years, the sea no longer provides them with a bountiful harvest, and they, as with other peninsula Orang Asli and the Orang Asal communities of Sarawak are seeing their way of life cast aside at the altar of economic development.
