Drowning tapir rescued off Cherating

Malaysian Nature Society President Prof Dr Maketab Mohamed said that Mohd Hafiz (of the famed Hafiz Fireflies) together with Che Mat of Chendor (with the help of other villagers) rescued atapir from the sea.

Later the tapir, a 150kg female was loaded up around 2.30am by the staff of the Krau Wildlife Sanctuary.

The tapir is in fine health and a microchip was implanted for future tracking.

World Tapir Day occurs on 27th April every year.

Malaysian Nature Society has taken the lead in celebrating this day as a public event.

It will be at held at Mutiara Resort Taman Negara, Kuala Tahan.

This event will be in collaboration with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), PERHILITAN, Faculty of Forestry of Universiti Putra Malaysia and Mutiara Resort Taman Negara.

This event’s main objective is to raise the awareness and conservation to our Malayan Tapir as an important Malaysia icon especially in Peninsula Malaysia.
