LED road lights could save us a fortune

The government can reduce costs by up to 50 per cent by using LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs for road lighting, said
Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor.

He said a pilot project on this had been started in collaboration with Royal Philips Electronics involving the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Federal Highway and the Middle-Ring Road 2 (MRR2), entailing a total lenght of
63.1 kilometres.

“It is also in line with the government aims to introduce more environment friendly technology in urban areas.

“Lighting of highways in the country is costing the government RM26 million annually currently,” he told reporters after launching an LED lighting project by the the company at the Subang Petronas station near here today.

He added that he would be asking the Malaysian Highway Authority to look into the matter as well.
