JB cops fight crime with bicycle

The Johor Bahru (South) district police have found an additional and effective approach in complimenting its existing crime prevention measures.

So don’t be surprised if you happen to come across policemen cycling around in your neighbourhood in the wee hours of the morning.

It’s police district chief, Zainuddin Yaacob said that the novel approach has yielded positive results.

The “‘bicycle patrol” crime-prevention unit was formed just two months ago.

The ‘bicycle patrol’ unit is made of fifteen police personnel who work from 12 midnight to 7am the next day.

The publicly well accepted initiative has helped in drastically reducing house break-in and robbery within the city, he was speaking to reporters after witnessing a ceremony in destroying one thousand seventy-one confiscated computers units in Larkin police station here yesterday.

The bicycle patrol teams have been actively working the ground in Taman Pelangi Indah, Taman Setia Indah, Larkin, Taman Pelangi and around the city proper.

It is reported that these places have been enjoying drastic drop in criminal activities as compared to three months ago.

He said, the bicycle patrolling teams move about in almost absolute quietness in the early hours where house break-in and robbery incidences normally take place between 3am to 5am.

The bicycle patrolling team compliments other exiting mobile crime prevention patrolling measures like those using MPVs, cars and motorcycles, in crime prevention effort.

The bicycle patrolling teams have been focusing on secluded areas, the entry/exit points and areas bordering the highway.
