Police detained two men and a married couple, and seized 4.7kg of heroin worth RM250,000 in a raid at a supermarket parking lot in Alma, Bukit Mertajam, yesterday.

Penang deputy police chief Abdul Rahim Jaafar said the four, aged between 37 and 63, were detained by police officers from Bukit Aman and Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Departments (CID), at 3.25pm.

“Acting on a public tip-off and intelligence gathered over the past month, the team managed to track the drug distribution syndicate.

“During the operation, we cornered two people in a Proton Wira, and on checking we found the heroin inside the car,” he told reporters today.

Present was Penang Narcotics CID chief Supt S. Batumalai. Abdul Rahim said following the arrests, police picked up two more individuals in the area.

“Initial investigations found that all of them are members of a syndicate active in drug distribution in the state for the past several months,” he said.

Abdul Rahim said police were then taken to a house belonging to one of them, where they recovered cash in local and foreign currencies worth RM137,595 and jewellery valued at RM16,545.

“The husband and wife are unemployed, while the 63-year-old man works as a caretaker of a computer shop, and the fourth suspect is a trader,” he then added.

Two of the suspects had previous criminal records. Police have remanded them until May 4 to help in the investigation under
Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
