Adulterant found in two traditional health products

Users of traditional health products ‘JCare-su’ and ‘JCare-in’ have been ordered to stop immediately as they contain glibenclamide, a scheduled poison.

Users of traditional health products ‘JCare-su’ and ‘JCare-in’ have been ordered to stop immediately as they contain glibenclamide, a scheduled poison.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said the registration of ‘JCare-su’ and ‘JCare-in’ had been cancelled by the Drug Control Agency at its 237th meeting following detection of the scheduled poison, glibenclamide. He said in a statement that glibenclamide is used in the treatment of diabetes and not classified as traditional medicine.

He said the medicines containing glibenclamide can only be supplied by doctors or pharmacists, adding that the use of glibenclamide without medical supervision can cause side effects such as headache, chills, sweating, confusion and fatigue, all symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
The products are registered by Business Kiara Sdn Bhd and manufactured by Len Fa Medical Supplies (M) Sdn Bhd.
He reminded sellers that they can be charged under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984 which carries a fine of not more than RM25,000 or a jail term of not more than three years, or both.
