Dengue on the rise, death recorded in Selangor

A dengue-related death in Selangor and a hike in the number of dengue cases were reported from March 27 to April 2, bringing the number to 336 reported cases that week, an increase of 35 cases compared to the previous week.

Health director-general Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman said the death involved a 43-year-old woman who worked as an assistant account manager at a private company.

“Our investigations found that the localities involved were areas with high dengue cases and Aedes mosquito breeding grounds. We found Aedes breeding grounds in homes and open spaces, whereby owners of such premises were each compounded RM500,” he said in a statement today.

He said seven states which showed a hike in cases as compared to the previous week were Terengganu  (14 cases), Selangor (9), Johor (8), Kelantan (7), Perak (6), Negeri Sembilan (3) and Pahang (1).

Dr Hasan said throughout last week, 49 epidemic localities in 15 districts were monitored nationwide, with four ‘hotspots’.

The ‘hotspots’ in Selangor were identified as Seksyen 4 Bandar Rinching, Hulu Langat and Taman Nirwana while those in Kuala Lumpur are Rumah Kediaman Angkatan Tentera Ampat Tin and the Laksmana People’s Housing Project in Jalan
Peel.

On Chikungunya, two cases were reported from March 27 to April 2, as compared to one in the previous week. Both cases occured in Selangor and Pahang, bringing the total number to 13.

The total number of Chikungunya cases dropped by 97 per cent, in relation to 508 recorded for the same period last year.
