It was ‘high noon’ at a snooker centre here early today, as two policemen took on a 10-man gang of armed robbers, killing one, detaining another and putting to flight the rest.
One of the fleeing robbers was shot in the leg by the policemen in the incident at the entertainment outlet about 5 am, just 200 metres from the Permas Jaya police station.
The bloody confrontation with the intruders armed with machetes was inevitable as the gang attempted to attack the policemen despite the latter identifying themselves.
Earlier, the gang had robbed the teller and customers at the outlet, scooping RM1,200, a necklace and two mobile phones. During the hold-up, the robbers slashed and injured three patrons.
Johor police chief Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said, in self-defence,the two policemen fired three shots at the gang of robbers which had charged at them.
He said a robber was killed while another was shot in the leg.
Speaking to reporters at the state police contingent, Mohd Mokhtar said the two policemen were alerted of a hold-up in progress at the snooker centre and had gone to investigate.
However, they were confronted by the gang which was armed with machetes and undeterred, despite the policemen identifying themselves and ordering them to surrender. The police chief said the three injured patrons were treated at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here for head and body injuries.
