The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) has advised the public to spend wisely during the Fair Price Campaign to be held nationwide from June 15 to Aug 31.
Its secretary-general, Muhammad Shaani Abdullah said consumers should differentiate the types of goods needed to be purchased to avoid wastage and not to be deceived by cheap sales and stretched their budgets.
Fomca hopes the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism will conduct an awareness campaign on financial management, especially on ways consumers should spend during the Fair Price Campaign, he told Bernama here yesterday.
Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Ismail Sabri Yaakob (right) said yesterday that 50 business sectors would take part in the large-scale Fair Price Campaign which was aimed at reducing the burden of the people and stimulating economic growth.
Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia secretary-general Dr Maamor Osman said the ministry should draw up guidelines for traders to prevent them from cheating consumers with marked down prices during the campaign.
He said although consumers could exert pressure on pricing, they were always at the receiving end for traders seemed to be more powerful than consumers and could dictate terms.
Urging consumers to manage their finances well, he said they should spend within their means, reduce their debts, and not to get easily dependent on credit cards.
