Penang police believe they have crippled a syndicate involved in car and motorcycle theft, with the arrest of 27 suspects, since January.
North-East district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the suspects, believed to be members of the syndicate, aged between 18 and 50, were detained in connection with 49 motorcycles and three cars reported stolen since early this year.
“From the 27 arrested, 10 have been charged in court,” he told reporters atthe Police Day celebrations here today.
He said the success of the police in crippling such activities and reducing the number of cases from 836 last year for the same period, to 643 this year, was due to the cooperation and support of the people.
“Without support and help from the people who are involved in voluntary patrolling, auxiliary police and community police, we cannot successfully reduce crime,” he said.
