Labuan-born Janice Tan is excited for being chosen as a finalist for the Miss Malaysia World 2016 pageant. The 20-year-old INTI University mass comm student and part-time model who is of mixed Filipino and Chinese blood says she is always ready to challenge herself and it gets better each time.

Tan will go all out to prove her worth and unleash her full potential to be a Miss Malaysia World champion. She won her first pageant title at 17 years of age, since then she has never stopped dreaming. She went on to win more titles in 2014 and 2015 by continuously challenging herself but now her next goal is to win the prestigious title of Miss Malaysia World 2016.

Tan loves walking her dog in her free time and her interests include reading novels and cooking.

Citizen Journalists Malaysia (CJMY) asked Tan about her achievements, her passion for challenges, her goals and what she is doing to prepare for the upcoming Miss Malaysia World 2016 grand finals on 27th August.

Tell us about your achievements to date
It was in 2013 while holidaying in Singapore that I spontaneously decided to take part in the Miss Santabella pageant and guess what I won the title. I felt more confident after I won my first pageant so in the following year 2014, I entered and won three more pageants: Miss Mean Machine 2014 in Penang, Race Queen Malaysia 2014 and Miss Oktoberfest 2014.

I challenged myself to join top-tier beauty pageants instead of the smaller scale beauty pageant contests. In 2015 I entered and won the Miss Kuala Lumpur Earth 2015 pageant and went on to win the Miss Malaysia Eco Beauty 2015 title.

The most memorable pageant I experienced was when I was approached by a talent scout and was chosen to enter an international pageant in Shanghai, the “Miss Asia Awards 2015” with participants from other Asian countries. To my surprise I won the competition despite all the strong international contenders being there. The win was my first International title. I felt proud and happy in bringing home the champion title for Malaysia.

Janice Tan hopes to have the capability to change the lives of others for the better.

What interests you to join pageants?
I have always admired beauty queens in front of the television screen as I do believe that they are the real-life version of Disney princesses. So pageant provides a platform for us women to show our capabilities and serves as a  ground to give us the speaker to express our voices and inspire others with positivity and hope while also be inspired as we go through the journey of life.

Are you confident of doing well in the Miss Malaysia World 2016 finals?
Yes, I believe my past experiences have made me mentally prepared to be in competition and I am physically ready to take the challenges and improve them. Most importantly my passion is put in the right place.

What preparations have you done so far to increase your chances of winning the Miss Malaysia World 2016 title?
I have always continued improving myself with good knowledge and skills required of a pageant queen.

What is the one thing you learned in all the pageants you participated so far?
To always stay true to your beliefs, have confidence, be accepting and open to other people’s critics and most importantly be sincere and always remember your roots.

Where do you hope to achieve in the next five years?
I hope to have the capability to change the lives of others for the better by contributing towards their well-being especially stressing the importance of education. I will also continue to seek for opportunities to improve myself and maybe branch out into the entertainment field, hopefully to be able to build a brand of myself.

What do you want to achieve in life?
I want to be a success. Success not measured by status or power but by what I have done my best in everything I am passionate about, hopefully inspiring others with upright morals.

What has been your proudest moment of your life?
The proudest moment of my life is realizing who I am today, who I have become through thick and thin. I am the product of my past, my present, my emotions, my decision, the smiles I have put on people’s faces. I am proud of who I am today and I will not stop improving myself, appreciating the gift of life that God has given me and making the best of myself as well as treating people as they deserve the best.

Tell us how you can make a difference in the world
Love is the instrument I

will use to show hope to everyone I encounter. I will emphasize on education as it is the key to having a better world.  My best shot will be to push all work out hard for the better education of those that are not that fortunate enough to get them.
