Felda Global Group and Mission Biotechnologies Sdn Bhd have entered into a long term supply agreement to establish Asia’s first fully integrated International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System (ISCC) certified palm biodiesel supply and production chain.
In a joint statement recently, both parties said they would work together to extend the certification programme to other Felda mills and plantations, to expand supply of ISCC certified biodiesel through Mission Biotechnologies refineries.
Felda is one of the world’s largest palm oil producer and MissionBiotechnologies is a global leader in providing energy from renewable origins.
The ISCC is required for companies wanting to supply biofuel or bioliquid in Germany, which provides subsidies, tax exemptions and other privileges to biofuel users.
The agreement was in line with Felda’s mission to expand into biofuels, said Felda Group President Sabri Ahmad, adding, the ISCC provides the group with an edge in competing on the international market.
Apart from meeting many requirements for the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil certification, the ISCC certification also complies with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
“The RED requires a minimum 35 per cent savings in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of biofuels and bioliquids to qualify for the subsidies and other privilieges.
“Using our crude palm oil from the Bukit Sagu and Lepar Hilir plantations to produce biofuel will result in GHG savings of 47 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively,” said Sabri.
