96 families from Orang Asli village cut off by floods

GUA MUSANG – The villagers were left stranded when the bridge connecting the village to the town of Gua Musang was under floodwaters

More than 300 Orang Asli people from 96 families in Kampung Pasir Linggi in Gua Musang cut off by floods. The villagers were left stranded when the bridge connecting the village to the town of Gua Musang was under floodwaters caused by incessant rain since Friday

The Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) came to their aid by distributing foodstuff to the villagers. JAKOA had been distributing food aid to the Orang Asli people living in the interior of Gua Musang with the help of the air unit of the Fire and Rescue Department.

“The foodstuff comprises rice, sugar, milk, biscuits, cooking oil, tea, eggs and sardines,” Kelantan/Terengganu JAKOA director Hashim Alang Abdul Hamid said.

The National Disaster Management Agency has issued a red alert for parts of Kelantan and Terengganu, signifying continuous heavy rain exceeding 240 mm a day.

The number of Malaysians who fled to flood evacuation centres doubled to 2,611 people on Saturday evening. Heavy rain continued to fall in the east coast states which get hit annually by monsoon rains between the end of the year and the early weeks of the new year, causing rivers to overflow.
