Artist transforms bedroom into epic ‘spaceship’ during Covid-19 lockdown

After the Malaysian government introduced the Movement Control Order (MCO) on 18 March in wake of Covid-19 outbreak, local artist Ahmad Fathil decided to use the free time to turn his 68 square feet bedroom into a intergalactic “spaceship” during the first five days.

Fathil posted step by step photographs of his creative project in a Facebook album titled “Extreme Decorating during Covid-19 Season” which has over 51,000 shares so far.

He started with showing the original state of the bedroom. “Okay, don’t laugh, this is what the room originally looks like. So shabby. Things hanging here and there,” he wrote in a caption.

Next he shared the sketches and plans for the makeover. “Based on my sketches, I wanted to create something that could take my imagination on a flight to infinite heights.”

His first step was to work on the ceiling, in which he combined paint and spray paint and turned it into a galaxy.

He then painted the door to mimic a high-tech sliding entrance that looked just like a scene from a science-fiction movie. “Ta-da! A done doorway. I feel like I could just walk into another dimension,” he wrote.

Once completing work on the ceiling and door, Fathil began working on the cockpit which was the highlight of the project. He explained that he drew the cockpit in chalk to successfully make it look three-dimensional and get the right perspectives. It wasn’t easy and it took him a few tries before he got it right.

“I erased a lot of it because I had to remind myself that the drawings couldn’t be too low because they would be covered by furniture”.

He then covered the control panels with plastic and tape so that he could continue painting the landscape beyond the spacecraft. He added LED light strips with changeable colours as a finishing touch to complete the effect.

In the end, he decided to switch the bed out and bring his work tools in to inspire him for his future projects.

“It seems that a lot of humans on Earth have been infected with coronavirus, so I’ll move to another planet. Who wants to join?” he wrote referencing the Covid-19 pandemic. Check out his full gallery below.
