Thirty-one of Malaysia’s brightest modelling talent went head to head in the Super Model Universe Malaysia 2020 grand final held under the Covid-safe SOP guidelines at Royale Chulan Damansara Hotel, Petaling Jaya on 13th September 2020.
In the end, administrative officer cum part-time model Addam Roslan, 27, and model-cum-actress Hafsa Munir, 22, proved they have what it takes to win when they succeeded facing off against their competitors to emerge the male and female champions of Super Model Universe Malaysia (SMUM) 2020.
Hafsa was crowned by last year’s title holder Thalia Thin Yi En.
Addam and Hafsa also won the XES Male Ambassador and TBC Female Ambassador awards respectively.
For their prizes, each took home RM1,000 cash, RM16,000 worth of diamond bracelet from Diamonia, RM1,000 worth of XES Shoes vouchers, EVO watch, Zandra & Gib swimwear set, 1-year membership at Target Fitness, RM350 worth of Body Breakfast beauty set and scholarships worth RM3,800 from Pusat Bahasa Titian Jaya Seremban and RM2,700 from Pusat Latihan Perniagaan Universal.
The two champions will represent Malaysia to compete against the best in the world at the Super Model Universe 2020 world finals in December this year.
“I wasn’t expecting to win, so it was a bit of a shock actually when I heard them call my name. It feels awesome,” Addam told Citizens Journal Malaysia (CJMY).
He cited discipline and commitment, as well as sticking to a challenging diet plan and workout routine as some of his winning strategies.
“I also got useful tips from experienced models who are willing to help me improve and work on my strength.
“It was an amazing experience learning from my co-contestants, some are experienced, others are newbies but we all share our knowledge, ideas and learning experience together helping each other to rise to our level and beyond. It’s truly amazing teamwork,” he said.
Addam has been modelling part-time in runway shows since last year and participated at Selangor Fashion Week.
“This is my very first modelling competition I had ever entered and I won. It’s actually not easy and I’m thankful to Ammetta and her team for the guidance and support. I now feel more empowered and confident to compete against participants in international competitions,” he added.
Standing 181 cm (5’ 11”) tall, Addam has ambition to turn himself into a successful entrepreneur in the modelling industry one day. He enjoys working out, playing futsal and hiking.
Ammetta Malhotra became the national director of Super Model Universe Malaysia when she was awarded the license by the brand principals to organise the local edition of the prestigious modelling competition in Malaysia after she made the Top 3 at Mrs Universe Classic pageant in Sophia, Bulgaria in 2019.
Hafsa, of mixed Thai-Indian parentage from Kuala Lumpur, was prepared and had set her sight on taking home the crown. The hard work paid off.
She told CJMY: “I feel blessed and I’m grateful for each and every one. Winning the crown was the best thing in my life. It’s a dream come true.
“I believe in myself to be brave and courageous to take on the challenge. I’m not afraid to be unique because I know my stuff. I gave my best.
“This won’t be possible without Ammetta, the entire Super Model Universe team and my partner so I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity. I’m forever grateful and thankful for having them in my life.”
Hafsa, at 170cm (5’ 7”) tall, loves being in front of the camera. Her passions for acting and modelling started in 2015. She has modelled at runway shows, photo shoots and recently acted in a movie ‘Town Mall’ which is an adaptation of author Hasrudi Jawawi’s best-selling horror novel of the same name.
“Acting and modelling are my passions. I’ll focus on continuously improving my skills and learning new things. I definitely want to go far and take my acting and modelling career to the next level.
“I want to do what I can to help support children who are suffering from child abuse especially during the pandemic. A lot of their stories go unheard and I’ll be the voice for the voiceless to help protect the vulnerable safe from harm and bring hope to them,” she added.
The Super Model Universe Borneo 2020 title went to 28-year-old model and commercial talent Zusther Anak Jemat from Sarawak, while the Super Model Universe International title was awarded to 26-year-old hospitality entrepreneur Gina Rochelle from Portugal.
The competition also crowned its first kid/teen models won by 12-year-old Reymi Tham from Selangor for the Kids Champion title, while 15-year-old Adibah Azmi from Selangor was awarded the Teen Champion.
However, the kid/teen winners will not be running for the international competition as the category was intended for developing young talents.
A total of 15 subsidiary titles were awarded for separate categories for Male, Female and Kids/Teens.
Previtha Rajah was announced the new Super Model Universe Malaysia Ambassador 2020, succeeding Renee Tang who was appointed last year and completed her task with the new appointment.
Previtha got her start in pageants in 1995. Since winning Miss Malaysia Queen of the Year in 1995, she has won many accolades at beauty pageants during her career, including Mrs Malaysia Asia Pacific 2019, Mrs Malaysia International 2019, Mrs Classic Malaysia Tourism Queen 2017, Miss International Queen of the Year 1995 (1st runner-up), Miss Malaysia Asia Pacific 1996 and Best Most Promising Model 1994.
Five winners of Brand Ambassadors for leading brands XES, Diamonia and TBC were also announced.
The Super Model Universe Malaysia modelling competition was organised jointly by Target Fitness PJ and Yinzi Event & Marketing.
The competition saw a magnificent cohort of young contestants who gave their best in the final while still adhering to Covid-related SOP guidelines.
Ammetta, owner and founder of Target Fitness PJ, said in a statement: “This year, we have a new batch of young aspiring models, and I applaud their bravery in stepping up to the rigours of this competition in such a difficult environment. You’re all winners in my eyes, and I’m sure you’ll find this competition a personally transformative and career broadening experience.
Yinzi Event & Marketing director Madam Lim Siew Cheng, in congratulating the winners and participants, said: “We’re happy that everything went well and we fully appreciated all the contestants putting in their extra efforts for a great Grand Final memory.”
Amid a lot of glitz and glamour, the grand finale was attended by troves of VIP guests, celebrities and beauty queens who were treated to a red carpet welcome.
The evening started off with an opening dance by Ammetta and the contestants, and the master of ceremonies were Alvin Anthons and Previtha Rajah. Onstage, the contestants strutted down the runway modelling in clothes created by some of Malaysia’s top designers.
Among the designers that were showcased on the runway included Gib Idris, Zanbra & Zandra, Qif Alavarez, Adriana Dvora, Azmi Halim, Maya Ubrani, Zuraida Said, Ellie, Elnaz Laki, Farel Mikhail & Jonathan Kok, Mensuit Jungle and Faridz Salleh.
All the winners were selected by a panel of 13 judges made up of industry professionals from various disciplines including fashion and modelling. They included, among others, fashion designers Farel Mikhail and Jonathan Kok, Mrs Classic International 2018 Melanie Foo, Stylo Model Award 2018 winner and Super Model Universe Malaysia 2019 Ambassador Renee Tang, fitness model and personal trainer Mortezza Estami.
