Renowned celebrity chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, better known as Chef Wan, brought his usual charm and humour to a diabetic-friendly cooking session at ParkCity Medical Centre (PMC).
The hospital held the Global Diabetes Campaign in conjunction with World Diabetes Day which is held on 14th November each year, to increase awareness about the disease.
The hospital’s in-house dietitians were also present to complement Chef Wan’s culinary skills with tips and insights on nutrition for diabetics.
The chef and restaurateur prepared two special internationally-inspired recipes, Hawaiian Tropical Fruit Salad and Morrocan Chicken Tagine.
Guests present tucked into the “diabetic-friendly” dishes which emphasized the use of fresh and colourful vegetables and fruits, and lean meats.
“It is well-known that diabetes has become increasingly problematic in Malaysia with cases growing over the years. As a chef for almost three decades now, I’m personally aware that this boils down to our eating habits.”
Chef Wan said he was happy to share his knowledge, tips and life experiences on preparing diabetic-friendly recipes as healthy food choices.
“This campaign is a great platform to educate and reach out to not just diabetic patients but also caregivers. I believe in taking care of our body from a young age as it pays off in the long run. As the saying goes, “health is wealth”, he added.
ParkCity Medical Centre chief executive officer Ch’ng Lin Ling said the event was to engage the public on importance of health self-care and educate them with nutritional tips and foods ideas for diabetics.
“Prevention of diabetes is key to ensuring that we have a healthy population, and a balanced diet plays a vital part in achieving this. We intend to continue our public health education programmes so people can be better-equipped to take charge of managing their health,” she said.
The hospital set up a temporary station to provide free glucose testing on November 19 and 20 at Plaza Arkadia for the Desa ParkCity community.
