SMS From An Angel

SMS From An Angel

A story of a journey through life.

SMS From An Angel will be staged at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) from 9 to 12 December 2010. Directed by klpac’s Director-in-Residence, Kimmy Kiew, this is an experimental work featuring herself, Leng Poh Gee and Angel Chang.

Every single person begins his or her life the same way, in the safe haven of a mother’s womb. But from the point of birth on, their life begins to take different directions. All kinds of factors come into play. The kind of environment they were born into, the type of family, the parents themselves of course and the accumulated life experiences. This serves to shape the individual in adulthood and may even dictate the path that he or she may take.

This forms the basis of the upcoming devised piece by Kimmy Kiew entitled SMS from an Angel. Inspired by a friend who suffers from mental illness brought upon by a traumatic childhood – the piece begins with the protagonist’s turbulent childhood. A victim of domestic unrest and violence, she grows up facing an assortment of problems that manifest in her social as well as intimate relationships. Feeling defeated and helpless, she gradually sinks into insanity in search for a reason to keep on living. Surrounded by unbearable chaos within her family, she finds hope in her close friends who attempt to heal her.

The idea was born out of the victim’s dire need to express her inner experiences as she struggles each day to find a reason to continue living. Perhaps arts can act as an avenue to kick start her path to recovery.

This devised piece is a collaborative effort by Kimmy Kiew, Leng Poh Gee, Angel Chang, Goh Lee Kwang, Lim Ang Swee and Alison Khor. A series of SMSes recording a person’s day to day feelings about life forms the basis of this multi-sensory experimental work where sound design will be fused together with physical movement and enhanced by strong visual imagery via video art.
