KLPac will be showcasing “Tchaikovsky – The Great Romantic Master” will take to the stage from 22 to 24 July 2022 at Pentas 1, klpac.
The Romantic Era, which began in the late 18th Century, was when concerts and operas became more accessible to the middle-class apart from the royals and wealthy.
This was also when national music schools started appearing, producing many greats including Tchaikovsky himself, who was part of the premier class of the St. Petersburg Conservatory after abandoning a career in civil service.
Moving away from the structure of the Classical period, the Romantic Era was all about drama and emotions. Tchaikovsky made his mark with ballets like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, operas, symphonies and, of course, concertos.
Music lovers will be able to hear one of his most famous compositions, Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, in the upcoming concert featuring the klpac Orchestra under the
baton of maestro Lee Kok Leong. Its distinct fantasia-like opening by the horn section has become one of the most recognisable tunes.
The piano concerto will be performed by Dr. Elaine Yap Sin Yee who has been making waves as a sensational rising pianist who “took all musical considerations in the stride”
(The Straits Times, Singapore). She has a string of accolades under her belt including the winner of the Michigan State University Piano Concerto Competition (2019), New England Conservatory’s Marion Rubin Berman 31’ Piano Honors Competition (2017) and the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition (Artist Category, 2013).
This will be a homecoming concert for Yap who has just completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at Michigan State University.
Throughout the piece, Ukrainian folk melodies also can be heard perhaps inspired by Tchaikovsky’s travels or the many summers he spent with his sister’s family in modern-day Ukraine.
The concert then follows with the romantic Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 13, one of his earliest notable works, written when he was just 26 years old after accepting a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory.
Widely known as Winter Daydreams, it offers an insight into a young Tchaikovsky who was at the cusp of success and fame. The piece is filled with many tender moments and feelings reflecting the names of its movements such as “Dreams of a Winter Journey”
and “Land of Desolation, Land of Mists”.
“Tchaikovsky – The Great Romantic Master” is a chance to experience two firsts by Tchaikovsky in one night and the beauty of his music.
