ArtScience offers RM20,000 cash prize

The ASM ArtScience cash prize RM20,000 for artist-scientist community competition is open to all Malaysians, individuals or groups.

The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) announced a cash prize of RM20,000 for the 2022 ArtScience Prize winner.

ASM started the ArtScience initiative to recognise talents and to appreciate works that embody the union of art and science.

This competition is organised in collaboration with the Maybank Foundation and National Art Gallery.

The submission was opened on June 30, 2022, and will end on September 14, 2022.

This biennial prize is the first to be established in Malaysia in response to the emergence of the artist-scientist community.

Theme for 2022

The theme for this year’s competition is “ArtScience Lens on Planetary Health“.

The participants can explore limitless interpretations of the theme, starting from gigantic, to microscopical details of the subject matter. 

The competition is open to all Malaysians, individuals or groups, above 18 years old, currently residing in or outside Malaysia.

ASM accepts mediums such as painting, sculpture, video or other media types in the stated submission category such as Visual Art, Time-based and New Media.

Each applicant is allowed to submit two submissions.

The inaugural edition of the ASM ArtScience Prize 

ASM launched the competition’s inaugural edition in 2020. The virtual exhibition was held on November 8, 2021.

ASM showcased the works of the prize winners and eleven others shortlisted for the inaugural edition on the Maybank Foundation’s website.

Dr Ahmad Hanif Ahmad Baharin and the team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) won the prize with the project titled Tropical Breathing the Waves. They walked away with RM20,000 prize money, certificates and a trophy.

Multimedia University’s Dr Roopesh Sitharan and Dr Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Yusof won the Rising Star Award category of the ASM Artscience™ Prize for a project titled Artificial autonomy and the question of subjectivity in AI.
