Fire razes longhouse to the ground in Sibu

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said that the fire started from one end of Rumah Jungan in Sibu and spread quickly, forcing the residents to rush out.

Fire razed down a longhouse near 36th mile of Sibu-Selangau Road, Sibu, this morning.

The Rumah Jungan Tamin Selangau longhouse has 36 doors with almost 200 residents.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received the distress call at 6.58 am.

Following the call, three officers, nineteen firefighters and fire engines rushed to the scene from the Selangau and Sungai Merah fire stations.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department the fire started from one end of Rumah Jungan and spread quickly, forcing the residents to rush out.

The firefighters managed to control the fire, but the fire destroyed the longhouse wholly.

“The operations commander reported that the 36-door Rumah Jungan, a non-permanent structure, was 100% destroyed by fire,”

The Rumah Jungan operation is still ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire and damages.

The number of residents and units affected by the fire is still unknown.

The Sibu fire department opened a one-stop incident point near the location to assist the affected residents.

The one-stop centre will assist the residents in obtaining destroyed documents from the relevant government agencies.
