Cargill and Yayasan Salam Malaysia (YSM) announce a two-year school aid program to support 3,000 students from B40 families in Malaysia.

The programme, known as Back to School, is a collaborative initiative between Cargill and YSM.

This programme aims to reach over 60 primary schools to support over 3,000 students from rural and urban areas in Malaysia for two years.

Cargill’s annual school support initiative has been ongoing since 2011, and this year Back to School will run in 30 schools throughout Malaysia.

Country Representative for Cargill Malaysia Chia-Ye Siam and Member of Board of Trustees, Yayasan Salam Datuk Yong Soo Heong officiated the ceremony at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor.

Cargill and YSM support students from B40 families, indigenous communities and orphanages to pursue education through this program.

By providing them with the tools required, including school bags, exercise books, stationery sets, notepads, pencils, water bottles, lunchboxes and other items, the programme aims to inculcate passion for learning.

The Back to School programme not only aims to help reduce the expenses of these families in economic need but also supports the community in striving to become more competitive through education.

“Many of the Back To School program recipients come from the B40 communities facing challenges exacerbated by the impact Covid had on the household income.

“With the program, I am sure the school aid will help lessen these families’ burden.

“We are thankful that over the years, Cargill has continued to support our children from B40 famillies through this program,” said Headmistress of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor Shabariah Binti Ismail.

“We hope that through this program, we can support them with some of the education expenses for their children and contribute to their learning and development growth as part of our commitment to Malaysia”, said Chia-Ye Siam, Country representative for Cargill Malaysia

“Education has proven to change lives for the better. This is why Yayasan Salam Malaysia is working with Cargill to support the younger generation.

“They not only be able to build a better future for themselves but also change the socio-economic circumstances of their families in due course,” said Yong.

Since 1997, YSM has operated on a very simple philosophy: that people everywhere are entitled to live in an equitable environment and pursue a life of dignity and fulfilment.

YSM organizes volunteer service programs in various fields by focusing on education, health and community development and is funded by individual and corporate contributions in every activity.
