AirAsia sold 500,000 seats

The biggest ever five million free seats sale by AirAsia, launched on Monday, has proved to be a massive hit with an incredible half a million seats sold across both short haul and long haul flights within a mere 48 hours.

This sale marks a record-breaking sale for AirAsia, with the highest number of seats sold daily since the onset of COVID-19.

Close to half a million seats sold in just the first two days of sale alone – an incredible milestone for the airline and the travel industry after almost three years of lockdowns and travel restrictions.

Value seekers have been snapping free seats to their favourite short-haul destinations by the minute.

Among the popular destinations are Langkawi, Penang and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai in Thailand, Bali in Indonesia and Cebu in the Philippines.

Longer haul flights on AirAsia X and Thai AirAsia X, which are also on sale now for ticket prices starting from RM499 (inclusive of taxes and charges), have also been very popular.

Long destinations are available from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to Seoul, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Auckland, New Delhi and new destinations such as Jeddah, Tokyo and Sapporo.

Capital A Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said Air Asia created the Big Sales 21 years ago.

“While everyone was looking at digital advertising, we went back to traditional media and bucked the trend of conventional advertising using digital media.

“I am thrilled that our support of traditional media that has always been there in AirAsia resulted in record-breaking daily sales.

“It was emotional for me to see today’s achievement, having gone through almost three years of difficult times to see us surpass our pre-COVID record daily sales record of 230,000 in January 2020.

“I want to thank my unsung heroes in the commercial, branding and communications department for their constant and unwavering support and the can-do attitude to bring us back to our previous heights,” said Tony.

Meanwhile, AirAsia’s Group Chief Commercial Officer Karen Chan said it is incredibly uplifting to see such strong demand across ASEAN destinations and our recently restored Australian, Korean, Japanese and Middle Eastern routes.

While we are not out of the woods yet and still in recovery mode, this five million free seats sale is a strong testament that we are back.

“We want to thank all our loyal customers for continuing to support AirAsia then and now. We sold half a million seats in a mere two days. That’s almost 200 seats per minute!

“Our free seats on sale mean you only have to pay the airport taxes and applicable charges to fly from just RM23.

“This is less than the cost of a movie ticket or dinner for two or even a single theme park entry pass – the list can go on!

“Our longer haul routes are also on sale with an incredible value starting from under RM500 each way (including taxes and charges). Fly further without breaking the bank and explore the globe.

The free seat promotion is available exclusively on the AirAsia Super App and website until 25 September 2022 for travel between 1 January 2023 and 28 October 2023.
