The Penang state government is ready to face any eventualities during the expected northeast monsoon this November.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the preparations made so far were by appointing focal persons for disaster management at all district and land offices (PDTs) and at all departments and agencies statewide.

The State Secretariat Office Disaster Management Unit will closely monitor the monsoon season.

Among the measures include the appointment of Disaster Management Focal Persons in all the District and Land Offices, state government agencies and departments.

He said the State Finance Department had also approved an allocation of RM400,000 this year to procure disaster management assets and supplies.

“Local authorities have to ensure all clogged drains, canals and rivers, while public members are advised not to throw rubbish into the drains and canals as it will disrupt the water flow and cause flash floods,” he added.

“Clogged drainage systems can lead to flash floods. I urge everyone not to throw rubbish into the drains and rivers,” he said.

“We are glad to announce that the state’s Village Community Management Council (MPKK) members, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as the relevant agencies, are well-prepared ahead of the monsoon period,” he added.

Also present during the conference was state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.
