Sarawak Federation of Chinese Women Association achieved a Malaysian Book of Records (MBOR) entry for the category ‘The Most Number of Participants Wearing Cheongsam at an Event’.

The feat involved 316 local Chinese women wearing tailored cheongsams during a Sunday parade at Kuching South City Council (MBKS)’s Palmarium Garden.

The association organised the parade with the inaugural ‘Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ event.

The national-record certificates were presented by MBOR representative Lee Pooi Eng to the MBKS and the federation – both represented by Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

For the parade, the young and old participants showcased colourful cheongsams, some of which maintained the traditional patterns, while a few had modern designs.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the programme showed the special significance of promoting cheongsam’s timeless elegance and heritage while recording the history of Chinese women in Sarawak.

“Cheongsam ” highlights Chinese women’s traditional clothing, which shows elegance and nobility. Thus, I would like to encourage Chinese women to wear cheongsam more often so that Chinese culture can be passed on for generations.

“This event gathers all Sarawak Chinese sisters to have an exchange with each other, promoting mutual friendship with others, and to reflect the local culture of Sarawak through the event,” he said during his speech at the ‘Portrait of Cheongsam: Timeless Elegance and Legacy’ event today

Sim was joined by her daughter Carol Kho and granddaughter Melanie Teo.

Before the start of the parade, the participants gathered at a courtyard in front of the MBKS building to register their names – some were there as early as 7 am.

The courtyard also served as a place to take photos, either selfies or wefies or those of their family members and friends wearing cheongsams.

They began the march at around 8.30 am, making their way towards the Palmarium Garden.
