In a recent study titled “Proportion of Plant and Animal Foods in the Diet and the Risk of Developing Cardiovascular Diseases: Findings from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis“, researchers have found that consuming more plant-based food can help reduce the risk of developing heart diseases.

A team of researchers led by Casey M. Rebholz, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, conducted the study, which was published recently.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, analysed the health records of more than 10,000 middle-aged US adults. According to the study, people who consumed more plant-based food had a lower risk of developing heart diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.

The researchers found that for every 10% increase in the proportion of plant-based food, the risk of developing heart disease was reduced by 10%. The study also showed that people who ate more plant-based food had lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, a significant risk factor for heart diseases.

Additionally, the participants who consumed more plant-based food had a lower body mass index (BMI), lower blood pressure, and better blood sugar control. The researchers pointed out that this study confirms the benefits of a plant-based diet rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and fibre.

However, the researchers cautioned that a plant-based diet might only suit some. For example, people with certain medical conditions or nutrient deficiencies may require additional protein or other nutrients that are difficult to obtain from a plant-based diet. A balanced diet that includes plant- and animal-based foods may be more appropriate.

Overall, this study adds to the growing body of evidence that suggests that a plant-based diet can be a healthy option for reducing the risk of heart disease. The researchers recommend that people consider including more plant-based food in their diet to reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. Individuals can significantly impact their health by making simple dietary changes and reducing the risk of developing heart diseases.
