Two childcare centres, one in Putrajaya and the other, in Seremban, where two babies were reported to have died recently, had been ordered to close down for three days.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said initial investigations by the Social Welfare Department found the two childcare centres were not registered with the department.
Last Monday, three-month-old Nur Azwa Safrina Khairul Anuar died after choking on milk while be cared for at a childcare centre in Paroi, Seremban.
Prior to that, three-month-old Farisha Nur Hazreen Mohd Fairuz, died, also after choking on milk, while being fed at a childcare centre at Precinct 8, Putrajaya.
Shahrizat said legal action could be taken against the childcare centres concerned.
The children’s parents could also file civil suits against the childcare centres, she added.
She said it was important that operators of childcare centres ensure safety of children under their care at all times.
“They have to abide by the stipulated conditions and meet the required standards.
“Parents are also advised to refer to the Social Welfare Department’s website to check whether the childcare centres where their children are sent to are registered with the department or not,” she added.
She also urged the public to report to the department of childcare.
