200 volunteers join beach clean up initiative in Miri

Northern Sarawak Journalists Association and Miri City Council organised the Marina Beach clean up campaign themed “Love The Beach, Love Miri.”

More than 200 individuals participated in the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association’s (NSJA) first beach cleanup effort, which was held yesterday at Marina Beach. The campaign, with the slogan “Love The Beach, Love Miri,” also included the Miri City Council (MCC) as a co-organizer.

The programme was deemed “a success” by NSJA President Andy Jong, who gave credit to all the participants from various government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), groups, clubs, and individuals.

“As media practitioners in Miri, this is one of our contributions in supporting MCC towards achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Jong at a brief closing ceremony held in the parking lot behind Miri City Hall.

Jong continued by stating that the campaign’s goal was to increase public awareness of the value of maintaining environmental cleanliness and their part in it.

Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii, who officiated the opening ceremony, gave a cash prize to the participating team that gathered the most trash throughout the clean-up.

The top prize of RM350 went to Persatuan Lakiput Sarawak, while runners-up JCI Riam, IEM Miri, and RTM Miri each received RM250, RM150, and RM100. Seeker Café and Bistro, the Miri Thai Poo Association Youth Section, and Bomba Zone 6 each received RM50 as consolation prizes.

Yii expressed his delight at the strong turnout for the initiative and emphasised the necessity for MCC to step up its efforts to continue educating the public about not using the rivers and sea as disposal areas.
