Island Plaza in Tanjong Tokong, once a bustling hub of commerce, entertainment, and social interaction, fell into neglect over the years with the emergence of new shopping malls in the state offering stiff competition with one another.

However, a Hong Kong businessman, Paul Law, has now taken over the iconic landmark with the vision of giving it a much-needed new lease of life. The building will go through redevelopment, redesign, and major revamping to become a preferred destination filled with exciting and fun activities once again. It will be renamed ‘Island 88.’

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new project that the rebirth of Island Plaza into Island 88 is a testament to their commitment to preserving Penang’s heritage while embracing modernity and progress.

“This would not have been possible without the commitment of Paul Law and Philip Law from the management (Hong Kong), as well as their team’s tireless efforts and dedication to ensure that this project is kickstarted with the highest standards of quality and safety,” he added.
