Since its opening on that date in 1923, the railway has carried over 47 million visitors to the top of Bukit Bendera, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. In 2022 alone, 1.48 million visitors used the Penang Hill Railway to reach the top of Bukit Bendera.

The history of Penang Hill Railway

It was first proposed by the Penang Municipal Council in 1906, and in 1909, a British company called Way & Works Ltd. was appointed to conduct a feasibility study. However, due to World War I, the project was put on hold.
It wasn’t until 1919 that the project was resumed under the direction of Arnold Robert Johnson, an engineer with the Federated Malay States Railways. The railway was built in just two years and opened on 21st October 1923.
The railway was initially intended to transport goods and supplies to the top of Bukit Bendera, but it quickly became a popular mode of transportation for residents and workers in the area. In the early days, the railway had open carriages that could accommodate up to 38 passengers, and the journey up the hill took about half an hour.

Penang Hill Festival
The Penang Hill Corporation has planned several exciting activities for the year-long centenary celebration of the Penang Hill Railway, including a grand celebration known as the Penang Hill Festival (PHF) 2023.
The PHF will feature a variety of events and performances that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Penang. The festival’s theme is “East Meets West,” which aims to celebrate the diverse cultures that have contributed to the development of Penang Hill.

The future of Penang Hill Railway

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said, “The railway’s upgrade is crucial as we anticipate that the number of visitors to Penang Hill will continue to rise in the future.”
