Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of the annual Trash Free Hill event on 24th September 2023.

As the fourth edition of this initiative since its inception in 2018, Trash Free Hill aims to raise awareness about environmental preservation and promote responsible waste disposal.

Individuals from all walks of life, especially families, experienced hikers, and corporate teams, are invited to participate in this impactful clean-up drive.

TFH is an annual plogging activity held at Penang Hill, serving as a platform to educate and raise environmental consciousness among participants.

The primary objective is to preserve the hill and its biodiversity by promoting responsible waste disposal. Throughout the years, TFH has witnessed a significant increase in volunteer participation, demonstrating its growing impact and success.

Since its inaugural year in 2018, TFH has seen remarkable progress. The first edition attracted 550 volunteers who collectively cleared a total of 500 kg of trash from the hill.

The following year, the event garnered even greater participation, with over 726 volunteers successfully cleaning up more than 480 kg of waste. In 2022, 736 dedicated volunteers removed 436.4 kg of trash, showcasing their commitment to preserving the beauty of Penang Hill.

Join the clean-up drive at Penang Hill

Trash Free Hill: Preserving the pristine Penang Hill

TFH will take place from 6:30 am to 12 noon across seven trails around Penang Hill.

The clean-up drive will begin at various entrances, including Moongate Entrance A & B, Botanic Gardens, Jeep Track, Lower Station/Heritage Trail, Hye Keat Estate, and Jalan Air Itam. The trails will culminate at the Dataran, Penang Hill.

PHC aims to recruit 700 volunteers this year, and each participant will receive a TFH Volunteer Participant Kit and an e-certificate as a token of appreciation. To support Penang State’s green initiative, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and wear their previous Trash Free Hill t-shirts when attending TFH.

Registered volunteers will receive gloves, garbage bags, and gunny sacks to facilitate their clean-up efforts.

The collected waste will be carefully analyzed by personnel from the Center for Global Sustainability Studies and Kampus Sejahtera of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Registration for TFH is free and opens from 14th August onwards, with online sign-ups available on Penang Hill Corporation‘s website.

Individual, business, and organizational sponsorships are also welcomed to support this significant environmental event.

Trash Free Hill 2023 is a collaborative effort involving the Penang State Government, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), Penang Green Council (PGC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang Hill Residents Association, Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), Air Itam Bukit Bendera Volunteer Fire Brigade, North-East District Health Office, Penang Hill Police Station, Penang Botanic Gardens Department, and the hikers’ community.
