The Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, announced that the highly anticipated ‘Pusat Transit Gelandangan’ or transit centre for the homeless in Jalan C.Y. Choy, George Town, will be operational from August 1.
This initiative aims to prioritize the safety and well-being of the homeless population while providing them with temporary shelter and necessary support.
The transit centre is seen as a vital platform to address the needs of the homeless and reintegrate them into society.
A compassionate approach to homelessness
Chow emphasizes the importance of recognizing the homeless as an integral part of society and ensuring their safety and well-being.
The ‘Pusat Transit Gelandangan‘ serves as an essential facility to offer temporary shelter to the homeless until they can return to their respective homes or find spaces in old folks’ homes.
This initiative reflects a compassionate approach to addressing homelessness and emphasizes the responsibility of the community to provide the necessary support.
Collaborative efforts and key features of the transit center
The successful establishment of the ‘Pusat Transit Gelandangan’ is the result of collaboration between the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and various stakeholders.
The transit centre comprises two units—a conserved Category Two heritage building and a newly constructed three-story building.
With an investment of RM4.4 million, the centre offers accommodation for up to 88 residents and includes facilities such as laundry services, a café, recreational spaces for senior citizens, and a community centre.
Engaging the community and providing opportunities
Chow highlights the importance of community involvement in supporting the ‘Pusat Transit Gelandangan.’
The transit centre will serve as a designated distribution centre, allowing interested parties to contribute food and other essential items to the homeless in a systematic and organized manner.
Furthermore, NGOs and other organizations are encouraged to conduct workshops, courses, and programs to equip the homeless with relevant skills in the digital era, fostering their reintegration into society.
The opening of the ‘Pusat Transit Gelandangan’ in George Town signifies a significant step in addressing homelessness and providing a safe haven for the homeless population.
