The inaugural flight carried 188 passengers and arrived on Monday, 19 June, marking a significant milestone in expanding international connectivity to Sabah. Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment and Chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, warmly welcomed the passengers at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

Recognizing the importance of enhanced international connectivity, Joniston highlighted the positive impact it has on Sabah’s tourism industry and overall economic growth. By increasing connectivity, Sabah opens doors for more visitors to experience its natural wonders and cultural heritage while generating employment opportunities and driving sustainable development.

South Koreans have shown a consistent interest in exploring Sabah, making them the top international visitors to the state. With 68,685 South Korean visitors between January and April this year, compared to 720 in the same period last year, the demand is evident. The introduction of T’way Air’s direct route is expected to further accelerate this growing trend, fostering stronger tourism linkages between the two destinations.

Sabah’s captivating natural wonders, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality have contributed to its rising popularity as a preferred destination for South Korean tourists. The state’s islands, beaches, golf courses, diving sites, and birding opportunities have attracted the attention of Korean travellers seeking memorable experiences.

To capitalize on this interest, the Sabah Tourism Board has strategically planned two significant events—the Asian Dive Expo (ADEX) and the Asian Bird Festival—to entice international participants, including those from South Korea. Hosting these events underscores Sabah’s commitment to becoming a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Currently, Sabah is connected to 10 international cities, and the addition of the Incheon-Kota Kinabalu route strengthens its global connectivity.

Looking ahead, Sabah is set to receive more direct flights in the coming months. Shanghai Airlines will reinstate daily direct flights to Sabah on July 2, connecting Sabah with Shanghai. AirAsia also plans to commence routes from Beijing to Kota Kinabalu (daily) on July 2 and from Macau to Kota Kinabalu (4 times weekly) on July 16.

Moreover, Jin Air’s aircraft upgrade to the B777, increasing capacity from 189 to 393 passengers, starting in July 2023, further highlights the growing interest and demand for Sabah as a premier destination.
