Penang’s tourism industry rebound with a 90% recovery in passenger movement and to achieve 100% recovery by year-end.

Penang, known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant tourism offerings, has experienced a significant recovery in its tourism sector with a remarkable 90% increase in passenger movement.

This recovery signifies a positive rebound in tourism activities, boosting the state’s economy and reviving the spirit of the travel industry.

The caretaker state exco for Tourism and Creative Economy (Petace), Yeoh Soon Hin, expressed his delight and optimism for a complete recovery during Petace’s Media Appreciation Night at Penang Golf Club.

A Steady rebound in Penang tourism

With the theme “Rebound In Style,” the Media Appreciation Night perfectly captured the positive momentum of Penang’s tourism industry. Yeoh Soon Hin expressed his confidence in achieving 100% recovery by the end of the year, showcasing the resilience and determination of Penang’s tourism sector.

The number of international direct flights has also seen a substantial increase of 84% compared to the pre-pandemic period, indicating growing connectivity and a renewed interest in Penang as a sought-after tourist destination.

Yeoh acknowledged the invaluable support and dedication of the media in promoting Penang’s tourism. He praised the media’s relentless pursuit of excellence in travel features and documentaries, which played a crucial role in putting Penang on the global tourism map.

Through their in-depth coverage of Penang’s vibrant street art, colonial architecture, and cultural festivals, the media has inspired visitors from all over the world to experience the unique tapestry of Penang’s identity.

During the Media Appreciation Night, Yeoh highlighted the strong collaboration between the media and Penang’s tourism authorities. He expressed his gratitude for the media’s efforts in forging partnerships that have enabled Penang to reach a wider audience, tap into new markets, and launch successful campaigns.

The event also featured a sumptuous buffet dinner for the media practitioners, followed by an exciting lucky draw. Lee Yee Mun of China Press won the grand prize, a return air ticket from Penang to Taipei, courtesy of STARLUX Airlines.

The ticket was presented by Phoenix Li, the manager of STARLUX Airlines Penang Office, in the presence of Yeoh. To conclude the evening on a delightful note, the media attendees indulged in a durian feast, accompanied by other tropical fruits such as rambutans, mangosteens, and chempedak.
