Penang residents and visitors will soon enjoy a new and improved ferry service as four new ferries are set to commence operations on August 7 this year.

The good news was announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who revealed that passengers will even get to enjoy a month-long free ferry ride to celebrate the launch.

The arrival of the new ferries marks a significant milestone for Penang’s transportation system, providing enhanced convenience and improved commuting experiences for residents.

The four new ferries, named Teluk Bahang, Teluk Kumbar, Teluk Duyung, and Teluk Kampi, recently arrived from the Haiphong shipyard in Vietnam to the Butterworth Wharf.

Each catamaran-style ferry cost RM18 million, with a total investment of RM72 million for all four units.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow boarded the Teluk Bahang ferry to witness the momentous occasion.

This marked the beginning of a trial period, during which pilot-based activities will be conducted on all four ferries before officially opening to the public.

The new ferries are equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance passenger comfort and safety. These include the ability to rotate 360 degrees, air-conditioned coaches, dual entry and exit points for easy access, and dedicated facilities for people with disabilities.

Safety measures such as closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) and fire extinguishers have also been installed on board. The ferry service will operate between the upgraded Raja Tun Uda terminal on the island and the new terminal at Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim on the mainland.

Passengers can expect a convenient and efficient commuting experience, with ferry services starting as early as 6 am and ending at 8.30 pm. During peak periods, the ferries will operate with a frequency of every 30 minutes, ensuring minimal waiting times for commuters.

The short ferry ride between the terminals will take approximately 10 minutes, providing a quick and efficient mode of transportation between Penang Island and the mainland.
