Penang proposes RM40 million heritage conservation projects

Penang Caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the state government has proposed seven categories of heritage conservation projects to the Department of National Heritage.

This proposal comes after an initial allocation of RM50 million in the revised Budget 2023 for the preservation and management of Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

As George Town celebrates its 15th year as a World Heritage Site, the government remains committed to protecting these cultural treasures for the benefit of future generations.

Heritage preservation efforts in Penang

Under the leadership of Chow, the Penang government has invested significant funds in heritage conservation projects. Notably, the RM13 million upgrade of the Esplanade seawall has been completed, providing public accessibility to this historical landmark.

Additionally, the ongoing restoration of the moats at Fort Cornwallis, with a budget of RM20 million, is scheduled for completion by 2025. The government’s commitment to preserving Penang’s heritage is further exemplified by the repatriation of the Guar Kepah skeletons from the Netherlands.

These significant archaeological findings will be housed in the upcoming Guar Kepah Archaeological Gallery in Kepala Batas, set to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Chow highlights the importance of heritage preservation and the commemoration of George Town World Heritage Day.

The recently proposed heritage conservation projects, amounting to approximately RM40 million, encompass various categories of tangible and intangible heritage. These projects aim to protect and promote Penang’s cultural heritage, contributing to the sustainable development of the state.

The Penang Walkabouts Members Day event showcases the vibrant cultural workshops and activities that attract both local and international visitors, emphasizing the significance of preserving the state’s rich heritage.

Penang’s commitment to heritage preservation is evident in its proposal for RM40 million worth of conservation projects. The Department of National Heritage will review these proposals, utilizing the allocated RM50 million to support the preservation efforts.
