The anticipation among Penang residents, especially those on the island, is palpable as the end of the year draws closer, marking the commencement of the eagerly awaited Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. With the hope of alleviating long-standing traffic congestion in Penang, the LRT has garnered much attention and enthusiasm from the public.
Residents believe that the LRT will not only improve commuting convenience but also help them save on travel expenses. The extended LRT route, from Penang International Airport to Tanjung Bungah, will cover 29km and include 27 multi-storey stations, making it a comprehensive transportation solution for the region.
Excitement builds among Penang residents
Penang residents have expressed their excitement and optimism about the forthcoming LRT project, which is expected to bring significant relief to the island’s traffic woes. Many believe that the LRT will offer a much-needed alternative to the congested public transport system and private vehicles.
Farahlina Zainol, a daily commuter from Bayan Lepas, is eagerly waiting for the LRT to begin its services. She looks forward to the convenience of the LRT’s route from Penang International Airport to Komtar, which will ease her daily commute to work. Having used the LRT in Kuala Lumpur previously, she recognizes its benefits in avoiding traffic jams and ensuring a safer mode of transportation.
For college student Neoh Zhe Chung, the LRT’s convenience stands out compared to other public transport options like buses and e-hailing services. With punctuality and rising e-hailing rates becoming a concern, the LRT will undoubtedly become the preferred mode of transport for many residents.
R. Kallani, a long-time user of the bus services in Penang, is also looking forward to using the LRT. Having experienced the efficiency of the LRT in Kuala Lumpur, she hopes the LRT in Penang will help mitigate the worsening traffic situation.
Extensive LRT route and government support
Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that the LRT’s first phase, initially planned from Penang International Airport (PIA) to Komtar, has now been extended to Tanjung Bungah. This extension will cover a total of 29km and include 27 stations, with Komtar being a prominent station in George Town.
The RM4.5 billion project is a crucial component of Penang’s Transport Master Plan (PTMP), reflecting the government’s commitment to improve the state’s transportation infrastructure.
The recent announcement of additional funds from the Federal Government further accelerates the LRT project’s progress. With funds allocated to expedite the project, the LRT is set to begin construction this year, aiming for completion within five years.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the pressing need to address traffic congestion and expressed the federal government’s determination to resolve the issue through the LRT project.
With the LRT set to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and promote sustainable transportation, it marks a significant step towards the development and modernization of Penang’s transportation network.
