The first Malaysian ‘WordCamp’ was held at Citel Hotel, Mid Valley City last Saturday (22 May).
WordCamps are held all over the world and are events dedicated to all things WordPress. WordPress, a popular blogging platform, currently powers 8.5 percent of Internet websites or so says the founder of its nearest competitor, Drupal.
Keynote speaker for the day was Automattic Happiness Engineer Naoko McCracken. Automattic is the web company that created and supports WordPress.
A highlight of McCracken’s session was previews of the upcoming WordPress version 3.0, which will see native support for multiple blogs. Other speakers included David Wang who spoke on theme frameworks and Malaysia’s first problogger Liew Cheon Fong.
There were some gripes that the session could have been more technical, with more in depth coverage of topics. Most entertaining was the panel discussion where successful bloggers shared their insights about blog monetisation.
The event was jointly organised by Interunix, Grok, WP Design Studio and Kreative Themes. No official word on whether any more Malaysian WordCamps are in the pipeline, but the possibility seems likely due to very good response this time around.
