Penang LRT: Potential island-mainland link gains momentum

Transport Minister Anthony Loke hints at possible approval for Penang LRT project connecting the island with Seberang Perai.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has hinted at the possibility of a significant development in Penang’s transportation infrastructure—the construction of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) project connecting the island with the mainland, Seberang Perai.

Currently the LRT project was sanctioned to operate solely on the island, linking Bayan Lepas to George Town’s Komtar. The line was extended to Tanjung Bungah, with the Komtar being made as the transport hub recently.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of enhancing transportation links between Penang island and Seberang Perai to promote smoother travel.

LRT set to connect Penang Island and Seberang Perai

FreeMalaysiaToday reported that during the “Ceramah Madani” event at the Seberang Jaya expo ground, Minister Anthony Loke expressed his confidence that with Anwar’s support as the finance minister, the Penang LRT project could soon become a reality.

He acknowledged that the current plan for the LRT project solely on the island was not sufficient and that there was a need to connect both sides of Penang.

The proposed LRT project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance accessibility for commuters traveling between Bayan Lepas on the island and Seberang Perai on the mainland. By bridging this transportation gap, the project is expected to spur economic growth and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

However, the Penang LRT project is yet to receive official approval, and discussions with relevant authorities are ongoing.

Experts laud economic benefits

Transport experts and urban planners have shown support for the potential Penang LRT project, highlighting its potential as an economic catalyst for the region. Rosli Azad Khan, a transport expert, who spoke to Free Malaysia Today stated that the investment in mass transit should facilitate movement between Bayan Lepas and Seberang Perai, where travel demand has been increasing steadily over the years.

Previously, a report by The Edge in 2018 revealed that approximately 80,000 vehicles cross the first Penang bridge daily, with the number surging during festive periods. The proposed LRT link would offer a more efficient and sustainable alternative to accommodate this growing demand.

Careful planning and consideration of potential environmental consequences are paramount to ensure the long-term success of the project. Experts urge the authorities to strike a balance between sustainable development and meeting the growing transportation needs of Penang residents.

As discussions progress, the project’s potential economic benefits, coupled with the positive impact on commuters’ daily lives, underscore its significance for Penang’s future.
