UiTM to receive Starlink to boost Internet connectivity

UiTM will become the first institution with 10 Starlink to boost devices internet services at branch campuses.

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is set to enhance its internet services at branch campuses with the help of Starlink satellite devices. As part of the government’s initiative to improve internet quality, UiTM will receive 10 Starlink units to address connectivity challenges.

Communication and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, revealed that discussions with UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Roziah Janor have identified the Kuala Pilah campus in Negeri Sembilan as the first beneficiary of these devices.

This move comes following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment to resolve internet issues using Starlink.

Starlink boost for remote and underserved regions

Starlink, the internet service provided by SpaceX, has emerged as a game-changer in delivering high-speed internet services, particularly in remote and underserved regions. Recognising the potential of Starlink, UiTM has taken steps to improve internet connectivity at its branch campuses, ensuring students have access to seamless online learning experiences.

According to Fahmi, UiTM’s collaboration with Starlink was prompted by the Prime Minister’s call to address internet-related challenges faced by students. The Kuala Pilah campus in Negeri Sembilan is the first UiTM branch to receive the Starlink devices. The deployment is expected to take place soon, with discussions underway with the Prime Minister’s Office for a smooth handover process.

The move to equip higher education institutions with Starlink devices is part of a broader initiative to boost connectivity across the country. The Prime Minister expressed the government’s intention to install 40 Starlink satellite broadband devices at universities and schools. This decision came following Anwar’s virtual meeting with Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, the company behind Starlink.

Anwar highlighted that the Starlink devices would serve as a solution to slow and unreliable internet connectivity experienced by students during their studies. The satellite-based internet system would directly link to the satellite, offering faster and more reliable access even in areas with limited infrastructure. The plan is to initially prioritize universities, polytechnics, and schools that are in dire need of improved internet connectivity.
