Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is gearing up for a surge in daily commuters as it introduces three new stations along the KTM Komuter Utara train route.
The additions of Ipoh, Sungai Siput, and Kuala Kangsar stations are expected to bring an additional 2,000 passengers daily, significantly enhancing connectivity between these northern regions and Butterworth in Penang, along with its intermediate stations.
KTMB’s chief corporate officer, Suhaimi Yaacob, revealed that these stations previously recorded over 1,000 passengers utilising the electric train service (ETS). The short and efficient journey is expected to attract more passengers, including students and tourists.
The announcement was made during the 2023 KTMB Open Day programme, held in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations, and attended by Perak Corridor of Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Development Committee chairman, Loh Sze Yee, at the Ipoh Station.
KTM Komuter Utara enhances commuter convenience
Suhaimi Yaacob explained that the current train frequency can accommodate up to 450 passengers per hour during peak times, with trains arriving every two hours. However, they are prepared to increase train frequency if the demand for the northern route rises significantly.
This expansion of rail services not only but also aligns with tourism efforts. Loh Sze Yee noted that the Ministry of Transport and Railway Assets Corporation are evaluating necessary upgrades for Perak’s stations, aimed at providing more comfortable facilities for passengers.
In the near future, beautification and enhancements will be carried out at these stations, preluding the costlier and time-consuming upgrades. This initiative is particularly promising for Visit Perak Year 2024, offering tourists an efficient mode of travel between key destinations without the inconvenience of road congestion.
Loh emphasised that the new service will foster two-way movement between key points in terms of commerce, industry, workforce, and tourism. The improved connectivity is poised to be a significant boost for both the region’s economy and tourism sector.
Enhancing regional connectivity, economy and tourism
The KTM Komuter Utara route offers a swift journey from Butterworth station to Ipoh station, taking just 1 hour and 56 minutes. The adult fare for a one-way trip is RM12.80, while concessions are available at RM6.40 for children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities (OKU).
Passengers can catch the first train from Ipoh to Butterworth station at 4.40 am, with the return journey from Butterworth to Ipoh station commencing at 5.30 am. The last train from Ipoh station departs at 6.35 pm, while from Butterworth station, it leaves at 7.10 pm.
The new train service is set to enhance regional connectivity, promote economic development, and facilitate tourism, reinforcing the significance of well-planned and efficient public transport in the region.
KTMB’s expansion of the KTM Komuter Utara route with the inclusion of three new stations signifies a significant stride towards improved connectivity in the northern regions of Malaysia. With an expected influx of 2,000 daily passengers, this initiative is poised to enhance the region’s economy, provide convenience for commuters, and facilitate the growth of the tourism sector.
As railway authorities prepare to cater to higher demand, the extension of rail services aligns with broader efforts to elevate the comfort and facilities at Perak’s stations. This upgrade plan, combined with the efficient rail journey, holds the promise of making Visit Perak Year 2024 a resounding success and reducing road congestion for tourists and locals alike.
The KTM Komuter Utara route not only bridges geographical gaps but also fosters economic activity, offering a seamless and efficient mode of travel between key points in commerce, industry, and tourism. It underscores the importance of well-integrated and accessible public transportation in nurturing regional development and growth.
