Penang’s ‘Pesta Tanglung Tanjong‘ has made a triumphant return this year, transforming Armenian Park and its surroundings into a dazzling spectacle of colourful lanterns. This festival, initially launched in 2019 in the picturesque Armenian Park neighbourhood, had to take a hiatus for three years due to the pandemic.
The event marked its resurgence with the presence of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during the opening ceremony at Armenian Park. This festival holds a special place in the Chinese community, symbolising the strengthening of bonds among family members, friends, and the broader community.
Revival of Pesta Tanglung Tanjong
Chow, while gracing the opening ceremony of the ‘Pesta Tanglung Tanjong’ at Armenian Park, expressed his deep appreciation for the festival’s revival. He acknowledged that the ‘Lantern Festival’ is a cherished cultural celebration within the Chinese community, signifying the reinforcement of relationships among family members, friends, and the wider community.
Events like this not only connect the Chinese community to their rich heritage but also offer an exceptional opportunity for people of various backgrounds, including tourists, to immerse themselves in the festivities. Chow emphasised the importance of unity within the community, highlighting that it forms the foundation of national harmony.
“Let us, regardless of our political differences, stand united and not allow them to sow disunity among us,” said Chow during his speech. He expressed his hope that Malaysians, particularly Penangites, would remain united and resist factors that could lead to division.
The lanterns at Armenian Park and its vicinity, which are part of this vibrant festival, will be on display until October 14. The event was organised by the Kampung Kolam Village Community Management Council (MPKK) in collaboration with other partners.
Collective commitment to success
The ‘Pesta Tanglung Tanjong’ event was brought to life through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, and other dignitaries graced the occasion.
Wong Yuee Harng shared that Tanjong Member of Parliament, Lim Hui Ying, contributed RM50,000 to support the organisation of this event, highlighting the collective commitment to its success.
The festival’s revival has brought joy and cultural enrichment to the Armenian Park neighbourhood and beyond, serving as a symbol of resilience and unity in the face of challenges, particularly the pandemic-induced hiatus.
