TNB donates RM689,500 to South Penang fishermen

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) contributes RM689,500 to support fishermen affected by the transmission tower project in Penang.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has extended its support to the Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan (PNK) Pulau Pinang Selatan by donating RM689,500. This gesture comes in response to the challenges faced by 111 fishermen from the Gelugor and Batu Uban units, affected by TNB’s 8.5km monopole transmission tower project near the Penang Bridge.

The project aims to connect the Perai Power Station (SJ) Main Inlet Substation (PMU) to the Light PMU in Penang. TNB’s commitment to social corporate responsibility (CSR) is commendable, and the donation is seen as a step towards alleviating the burden on the affected fishermen.

Support from TNB is a catalyst for economic growth

The mock presentation ceremony, held at the Jen Hotel, saw Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow as the guest of honour. He lauded TNB’s dedication to its CSR programme, emphasising that such support was essential for the welfare of the affected fishermen.

Chow highlighted the significance of the electricity supply, mentioning its role as a catalyst for economic growth and infrastructure development in various sectors, including industry, transportation, and tourism.

Chow also acknowledged the importance of TNB’s ongoing project, costing over RM500 million, which is aimed at ensuring energy security on the island and for the future. TNB’s Chief Grid Officer, Dev Anandan, further elaborated that the project would establish a direct connection for electricity supply from the national grid to Penang, significantly enhancing the island’s electricity supply. The transmission tower project is expected to be completed by 2024.

TNB’s President and CEO, Datuk Seri Baharin Din, handed over a mock cheque of RM689,500 to the general manager of Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan (PNK) Pulau Pinang Selatan, Omar Hassan, in the presence of Chief Minister Chow, Zairil Khir Johari, Chairman of the State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee, and Abd. Aziz Rosdi, the Director of the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (Penang).

A boost for energy security

TNB’s project is a critical step towards strengthening energy security on Penang Island. With an estimated cost exceeding RM500 million, this initiative is vital for the island’s power supply. The project involves establishing a direct electricity supply connection from the national grid to Penang through overhead line transmission from the mainland.

The improved electricity supply is anticipated to have a far-reaching impact on the island’s development. It will not only cater to the growing demand for power but also pave the way for the expansion of the road network, public transport systems, and the enhancement of the port and airport capacity. This comprehensive development is expected to fuel economic growth and prosperity in the region.

TNB’s commitment to this project showcases its dedication to ensuring a stable and secure power supply for the people of Penang. The project’s completion in 2024 will mark a significant milestone in this endeavour.

TNB’s contribution of RM689,500 to the Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan (PNK) Pulau Pinang Selatan is a demonstration of corporate responsibility and support for the local community. The donation will go a long way in easing the difficulties faced by 111 fishermen affected by TNB’s transmission tower project.
