Air Samarkand has expressed interest in the possibility of introducing direct flights connecting Samarkand to Kota Kinabalu.
This revelation emerged during an engagement session between Sabah Tourism Board (STB) and representatives from Uzbekistan, including Air Samarkand, which took place at a UNWTO event hosted in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Uzbeks looking for a unique winter escape
STB chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who led a delegation to the UNWTO event, noted a growing trend among Uzbeks who prefer to visit destinations such as Bali, the UAE, Egypt, Vietnam, and Thailand to escape the harsh winter conditions from November to January.
However, they are seeking new and sunny destinations for their travels, and Malaysia, specifically Langkawi, is a well-known choice.
Sabah, with its pristine landscapes, beautiful beaches, island resorts, and consistently warm and sunny weather, offers an attractive alternative for Uzbekistan families and holiday-makers looking for a unique winter escape.
The region’s lush rainforests and rich wildlife heritage make it a compelling destination for Uzbek travellers with a strong inclination towards beach destinations and tropical islands.
Following the engagement session, Joniston proposed launching a familiarization trip for travel agents and involving social media influencers to generate interest in Sabah among Uzbek citizens.
He also highlighted STB’s active efforts to promote the state through travel agencies and online platforms, providing information about the top attractions, accommodations, and experiences available in Sabah.
Samarkand to Kota Kinabalu
The engagement session involved various Uzbek travel industry representatives, including Air Samarkand, Aeronautica Commercial, Air Marakanda, Asia Luxe Agency, and Ammy Travel.
The discussion centered on the potential for Air Samarkand to establish direct flight connections between Samarkand and Kota Kinabalu, making travel between Uzbekistan and Malaysia more accessible.
Joniston, who also serves as Sabah’s Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, led the STB delegation to the 25th UNWTO General Assembly held in Samarkand City.
During this event, he engaged with key players in the travel industry, including the Japan Travel Bureau, Traveloka, the World Federation of Travel Guide Associations, and the International Federation of Camping, Caravanning, and Autocaravanning.
These discussions aim to foster partnerships and collaborations that can boost tourism between Uzbekistan and Sabah, further enhancing the state’s appeal as a holiday destination for international tourists.
The expression of interest by Air Samarkand in establishing direct flights to Kota Kinabalu represents a promising development for tourism between Uzbekistan and Malaysia, particularly Sabah.
These efforts are aligned with Sabah’s vision of attracting more international visitors and sharing its diverse attractions with the world.
