Lorong Sentosa in Kampung Air, once considered run-down, has undergone a striking transformation, thanks to the collaborative efforts of 30 graffiti around the world along with local talent.

Once infamous for its association with prostitution, the alley in Kampung Air has undergone a remarkable transformation.

Financial support for the project was provided by various sources, including Nippon Paint, the Sabah Tourism Board, the Sabah Art Gallery, the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, tattoo artists, and two local hotels.

Crig Francis, aka “Cracko,” spearheaded the transformation of a local alley in Kampung Air through the “Street Stroke-Community Art Collaboration” project on Lorong Sentosa.

The alley, once known for its tarnished reputation, is now undergoing a remarkable makeover, changing the way residents feel about their neighborhood said Francis during an interview with New Straits Times.

Along with Francis, a diverse range of artists from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, the United States, Australia, and France have contributed to the murals adorning the alleyway.

One mural, featuring characters Roronoa Zorro and Bartholomew Kuma from the anime “One Piece,” was crafted by Colin McKinnon, a 38-year-old Australian artist from Sydney with 15 years of experience.

Today, residents in the area take great pride in their neighborhood, thanks to the beautiful artwork brought in by Crig Francis and the talented artists who contributed to the transformation.

Enhancing Kota Kinabalu’s image

Datuk Christina Liew expressed her hopes of enhancing Kota Kinabalu’s image as Sabah’s gateway, targeting visible improvements by the year’s end.

She mentioned that, with the pandemic’s easing, she’s utilizing her assemblywoman funds to carry out beautification projects in the Api-Api constituency. The objective is to create an inviting environment for tourists, rather than waiting idly.

Liew also stressed the need to address the restoration of City Park, acknowledging the high costs involved.

Nevertheless, she affirmed the commitment to the project, aiming to make the city an attractive destination, not only for its islands but also its urban appeal.

The transformation work has already commenced in Sinsuran, with demolitions of old structures and the refurbishment of walkways.

Additionally, Liew pointed out the presence of numerous unused water pipes attached to buildings, indicating the necessity for their removal, repair, and repainting to enhance the area’s aesthetics.

The revitalisation of Lorong Sentosa in Kampung Air serves as a testament to the power of art in rejuvenating urban spaces. With contributions from a diverse group of artists, both local and international, the once-seedy alleyway now stands as a vibrant and visually appealing attraction.

Liew’s vision to enhance Kota Kinabalu’s image as Sabah’s gateway demonstrates a commitment to revitalising the city’s appeal, with beautification projects like “Street Stroke” leading the way.
