Penang’s travel landscape is set to transform with the revival of daily flight services by Qatar Airways.
Commencing from October 29, Qatar Airways will reconnect Penang to the world, flying from Doha via Phuket. The resumption is anticipated to bolster the tourism industry and provide fresh prospects for international travellers.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, Wong Hon Wai, expressed his delight at Qatar Airways’ return and his hopes for expanded connectivity.
He stressed the significance of not only strengthening links with the East but also from the West. Wong said, “Xiamen Airlines initiated direct flights to Penang in September, and soon we will be welcoming Qatar Airways from the West.”
This development will usher in a new era of Penang tourism, opening doors for visitors from the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa.
Penang aspires to draw substantial numbers of business travellers and foster the growth of convention, conference, and exhibition visitors, particularly in the medical and engineering sectors. Additionally, the state is committed to promoting medical tourism in Southeast Asia.
Highlighting Penang’s vision for an enhanced travel experience, Wong outlined various infrastructure projects currently underway. These projects include the expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA), the introduction of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT), the Penang Hill Cable Car, and the development of Gurney Bay.
Wong noted, “These projects are poised to elevate the travel experience for tourists and will be complemented by several upcoming hotels in Penang.”
The resumption of Qatar Airways’ daily flight services to Penang is a significant milestone for the region. It marks a step towards increased global connectivity, promising growth in Penang’s tourism sector and enhancing the overall travel experience.
