A Qatar Airways Boeing 777 aircraft touched down at Penang International Airport (PIA) at 5.35 pm today, ahead of its scheduled arrival time of 6.20 pm, marking the resumption of its daily direct flights between Penang and Doha (via Phuket).

The arrival was celebrated with a water cannon salute, and passengers were treated to a traditional kompang performance upon disembarking.

In attendance were Wong Hon Wai, State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, and Qatar Ambassador to Malaysia, Salah Mohammed Al-Sorour, who distributed goodie bags and extended a warm welcome to the arriving passengers.

Speaking at a press conference earlier, Wong highlighted the significance of this resumption for the state of Penang.

Wong stated, “This marks a momentous occasion worth celebrating. Doha emerges as a pivotal gateway, connecting Penang to an extensive network of destinations across the globe. This development opens up a world of opportunities for our beloved state.

Wong further emphasized the appeal of Penang as a tourist destination, renowned for its vibrant culture, street art, delectable food, and warm hospitality.

He underlined that re-establishing the direct link between Doha and Penang not only expands opportunities for tourists but also promotes economic growth and encourages cultural exchange between the two cities.

He added, “Likewise, travelers from different parts of the world can easily access Penang through Doha, which serves as a major hub for Qatar Airways.”
