Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad made a resounding debut with its first-ever Alliance Bank Heritage Run 2023, drawing around 3,500 participants from diverse backgrounds to celebrate George Town‘s rich culture and heritage.

The event not only demonstrated the bank’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles but also served as a platform for community engagement and support for local businesses.

Participants enthusiastically gathered to take part in the run, which offered two categories – 3km and 7km – traversing the charming streets of George Town.

The event aimed to not only showcase the city’s vibrant cultural heritage but also to underline Alliance Bank’s dedication to sustainable practices.

As a tribute to George Town’s heritage, iconic trishaws were utilized to provide participants with complimentary rides, allowing them to explore the city’s historic sites and neighbourhoods from a unique perspective.

The Heritage Run forms a crucial element of the bank’s BeESG initiative, which seeks to support businesses and individuals in adopting sustainable practices.

Strengthening community bonds

Alliance Bank Heritage Run was a resounding success

The event also featured an array of engaging activities to foster stronger connections with the communities it serves. Runners and supporters had the opportunity to express their creativity through art, with their work destined to become a featured wall mural by local Penang graffiti artist Abdul Rashade.

The #SupportLokal Festival Area within the event grounds at Padang Kota Lama provided a platform for local food and beverage providers, unique craft artisans, and homegrown Penang businesses to showcase their products. This, in turn, supported and promoted local entrepreneurship.

Alliance Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Kellee Kam, a participant in the run, highlighted the bank’s vision of becoming a community-centric and ESG-driven organisation.

Kam stated, “The Heritage Run is a significant stride in support of UN SDG 11.4, enabling us to contribute to the preservation and safeguarding of world cultural heritage. We look forward to organizing more such events to continue bringing positive impact to the community and the environment.”

In keeping with the sustainability theme, the Heritage Run offered participants lanyards, medals, and T-shirts made from eco-friendly and recycled materials, all packed into reusable canvas bags. The PET lanyards were crafted from recycled plastic, the medals from recyclable wood, and the T-shirts from fabric sourced from recycled plastic bottles.

Additionally, Alliance Bank collaborated with the women-led organisation Kloth, reflecting the bank’s commitment to empowering communities through circular practices within the plastics, textiles, and clothing industry. The inaugural Alliance Bank Heritage Run not only celebrated culture and community but also underscored the vital role of sustainability in shaping a better future for all.
